With its clean lines, season-neutral design and goes-with everything taupe color, the timeless trench coat is the one of the most iconic pieces throughout fashion history. Created a century ago, yet it's still a universal style staple for both women and men. With today’s style options there's a take on the look for everyone, from classic pared down à la Parisienne, to a more modern over-sized Scandinavian silhouette.
Like many other classic items, the trench coat was initially created with the function rather than form in mind. It actually started as raincoat worn by the army officers during World War I. With its waterproof textile it could easily protect the soldiers in the trenches from rain and wind, hence the name ‘trench' coat.
Post-war the trench coat quickly became a favourite among women as well. Throughout the years, it’s been featured on a range of Hollywood stars, such as Greta Garbo in A Women of Affairs, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and also Meryl Streep in Kamer vs Kramer, for which she won an Oscar.
It quickly became a style essential for French IT ‘girls, such as Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin and Francois Hardy. Later on, it became 21st century-ready when worn by cool girls like Kate Moss and eco-warrior Emma Watson.

Our Newest Muse:
Since 2009, Mariona has been the content creator for fashion and beauty on Diario de Estilo ("Diary of Style"), a blog that belongs to digital ELLE Spain. The Barcelona based muse is also an influencer and fashion consultant for brands. Get to know her personal style and favourite picks from Mayla’s SS19 collection.
Would you say that your style is more Spanish or a mix of the places you’ve travelled to?
- It is undoubtedly a mix of styles. I have a classic foundation although I have always felt a sense of curiosity for mixing up items of clothing, prints and colours, ‘easy wearing’ defines me. I feel comfortable wearing outfits which combine casual style with an elegant touch and something sophisticated.
What is your typical daily uniform? What pieces do you wear over and over again?
- My uniform changes depending on the season. This winter I have worn outfits in black with white ankle boots, on a day-to-day basis as well. I used to modify the items of clothing so that the looks would be different.
What’s your favourite piece from Mayla’s SS19 collection?
- The suit jacket and trouser combos. I love the structured cut of the blazers and the slightly cropped cut of the trousers, it makes them current and modern. The knitted garments are also wonderful.
What does sustainable fashion means to you?
- In 3 words: awareness, respect and future.
“Mayla, the Swedish clothing brand that works with sustainable and reasonable fashion” is the caption of Mariona’s latest post on “Diario de Estilo", her fashion blog at Elle Spain. In the article she states that the fashion industry needs a radical change: “Brands like Mayla Stockholm are aware that the industry in general needs to change radically in order to improve its environmental impact and to act more responsibly. We cannot change everything, but we can make a difference by changing one or two little things.”
